Quotes

"If you ain't just a little scared when you enter a casino, you are either very rich or you haven't studied the games."
~VP Pappy

"Baccarat is a game whereby the croupier gathers in money with a flexible sculling oar, then rakes it home. If I could have borrowed his oar I would have stayed."
~Mark Twain

"In the case of an earthquake hitting Las Vegas, be sure to go straight to the Keno Lounge. Nothing ever gets hit there. "

COME TO THE RIO
MASQUERADE PARADE!

The Show in the Sky performs seven times daily in the Rio's Masquerade Village, featuring state-of-the-art floats that suspend from the ceiling and parade above the casino floor. The show evokes the electrifying and colorful atmosphere of Carnivale as performers clad in exotic masks and brilliant costumes entertain with exciting music and dance. One cool thing about this show is that audience members may take part in the parade by riding floats and wearing costumes unique to each parade. Or maybe not so cool, depending on the audience of the day :D
If you want to BE in the show - it's 10 bucks. And they say you need to be there 45minutes early.

Seven FREE performances daily starting at 3pm. ending at 9:30pm

This is the Free Rio Floor show that happens as the lighted gondolas, showboats and giant swans float overhead. Click on the picture for a larger version. -->

TREASURE ISLAND
From Skull to Dull

Ok, now this is one serious complaint.
When we came here- and for years before, Treasure Island had one of the coolest signs on the strip. It was a massive, three-dimensional plethora of skulls and bones and flags.. It was AWESOME to behold, night or day. Click the picture to see the frontage of TI and an enlargement of the sign. All of TI was an incredible piece of architectural artistry.
Last year someone made a serious design error. They took down the old TI sign and replaced it with something that looks straight from some Alabama trailer park owners wet-dream.
It is now simply this: "ti".

Aliens stay at the Luxor

Yes. "ti". Done in plastic baby poop yellow. You know what color I am talking about. After dark there are video plasma screens running in the t and i. But of course the letters are so narrow you cannot see what the videos are. The sign comes nowhere near the impact of the old sign- and the whole facade has lost its unifying theme and extraordinary charm.
To add to that HUGE mistake, they changed the Rough and Ready (free) Pirate Show featuring cannons and ships to a Butts 'n Boobs dance spectacular..... featuring cannons and ships.....

Treasure Island - We want you back!

The Rio's Exquisite Architecture

I have to say that the Rio is one of Vegas Best architectural monoliths- night or day. When you are driving up Flamingo toward the strip near sunset, the setting sun turns the whole curving side into an electric mix of golds and purples. Eye-Boggling in an entire town of Eye-Bogglers.

The Dancing Peacock at the Rio

Yes.. the Peacock dances.. and actually has pretty good rythm :D
This is the floor show happening under the Flying Parade at the Rio..

LIONS AND TIGERS -OH MY..

There are a few places in Vegas where you can go see the Big Cats. The Mirage has a lovely display showcase for the White Tigers from the Siegfried and Roy Magic Show. Unfortunately the show itself is no longer running due to the strange attack on Roy by a young tiger, but the Cats are still on display. The Mirage Tiger Display is framed by video screens that continually play clips of S&R and thier favorite cats. While in the Mirage, be sure to go to the Oriental Garden. It is lovely to walk through.

In front of the Mirage is our favorite waterfall garden that features a 'live' volcano that pops off all roaring flame and heat every so often after dark. Another nice little freebie, sometimes a bit too startling for little old ladies from Topeka.

The MGM features a display of live Big Cats as well. Of course the MGM features Massive Lions. The Lion Display is in the Lobby, and if you hang around for a little while you will see an interactive show with trainers that enter the massive, glass cased, nearly 2 story Lion enclosure and pray really really hard.
